Pendle Voice was founded in June 1975 to provide visually impaired residents of Pendle with a 90-minute audio version of the local weekly press. With no money, no experience and some borrowed equip- ment from Nelson and Colne College, that first 'Pendle Voice' served just three listen- ers!
When the first fast cassette duplicator arrived in December 1975, some forty listeners had signed up. Since that mom- ent, Pendle Voice has grown steadily and its output has blossomed from three to over two thousand tapes each week.
For some years, production was housed in a variety of borrowed spaces until, fifteen years or so ago, a four-roomed terrace house in Nelson was purchased. It has been the home of Pendle Voice ever since.
Each year has seen a growth in the work- load, but everything is still tackled by a committed band of up to eighty volunteers. Their efforts would be of little worth without the Royal Mail's free post concession, the vital link between the Talking Newspaper and the listener.
